About the Projects

I am currently working on visual interpretations of Gertrude Stein’s writing through prints and works on paper. Gertrude Stein used repetition to make auditory pattern out of sounds and oral pattern out of words, altering how her writing is heard and how it is spoken. I use that repetition to create a visual translation of what Stein created in literary form.

Stein’s repetition was never an exact duplication, but slightly shifted reiterations with subtle changes as her sentences evolved. I am interested in how Stein’s use of repetition allows me to access meaning in my own work as well as Stein’s. Repetition implies obsessiveness, reworking leads to both answers and questions, and altering and revising refines an idea or direction. Type/written and Beautiful are two on-going series that evolve from this exploration.
